A Taste of Three
Continents
Spanish Home Cooking:
Cocina Casera Española
by Miriam Kelen
After three years of traveling to every
corner of Spain, sampling, and cooking hundreds of dishes, Miriam
Kelen has captured the very heart, soul, and flavors of this
traditional blend of cooking in her Spanish Home Cooking:
Cocina Casera Española (Cocina Casera, Inc.;2002). Having
compiled more than 175 recipes, along with highlights and
anecdotes of her adventures, Kelen provides a delightful account
of a venerable style of cooking and its irrepressible guardians.
From the bracing seafood of Galicia and the spicy pork sausages of
the Basque Country to the legendary cheese of La Mancha and the
unique, leek-like calçot shoots of Catalunya, Kelen explores the
vibrant, but sadly neglected, varieties of real Spanish home
cooking. As individual as the regional dishes may be, however,
Kelen does acknowledge the common bond shared throughout Spain:
the passion for good, and a love of good company, with whom to
share it.
Miriam Kelen’s love of travel and joy in
partaking in the language and culture of Spain is evidenced not
only in the book’s recipes, but also in the nearly 250 photographs
she took of the country’s food and people. Although she has
written material for commercial books, this is her first cookbook.

Fiesta Mexicali:
Simple Mexican Cuisine with an American Twist
by Kelley Coffeen
Kelley
Coffeen calls her brand of cooking Mexicali, which simply means
the fusion of the Mexican formula for appetizers and smaller meals
with fun and the unexpected - in a word, California! In her second
book, Fiesta Mexicali: Simple Mexican Cuisine with an American
Twist (Northland Publishing; 2002), Coffeen offers a
collection of Mexican - inspired recipes for the American lifestyle.
Focusing on light and healthy eating as well as quick and easy
preparation, this book is pure fun.
In
Fiesta Mexicali, you’ll find enticing appetizers like Green Chile
Wontons, light meals like Firebreathing Chipotle Chicken Skewers,
and delicious drinks including Pink Cadillac Margaritas. As TV
host of "Kelley’s Kitchen,” Coffeen knows that a "fun and festive"
atmosphere are key to casual entertaining.
Kelley
Coffeen was born and raised in the Southwest. She is the author of
the self published Great College Cookbook of the Southwest,
which was featured on "Good Morning America.” She lives in Las
Cruces, New Mexico. Check out our Last Licks
section and try Carne Asada Classico - a Mexican-style
barbecue with Pico de Gallo, a classic fresh and tangy salsa, and
serve it with fresh fruits in a fabulous White Sangria.
It’s a Fiesta - Mexicali!
