Let the Kids Serve up the Treats This Mother’s Day!
She’s faster than a speeding soccer ball! She has eyes in the back of her
head and ears that hear even the faintest whisper! She leaps piles of
laundry in a single bound! She is the household hero Mom. Make Mother’s
Day even more memorable with special treats from children’s cooking
expert Barbara Beery!
Beery knows how much kids love to cook. She founded Batter Up Kids
Culinary Center in Austin, Texas, 15 years ago. Now, with her two
best-selling cookbooks, Batter Up Kids: Delicious Desserts and
Batter Up Kids: Sensational Snacks, kids can whip up something
fabulous for Mom, or with mom, quickly and easily.
"Children are the key ingredient in changing the way Americans eat," says
Beery. "My commitment in creating these cookbooks, as well as my culinary
school, is to encourage children to participate and celebrate the joys of
cooking."
Each cookbook has easy-to-follow, step-by-step instructions, and
full-color photos, making them easy for kids to follow with some adult
supervision. Beery also explains cooking terms and prep techniques,
gearing her books and culinary programs to kids ages two-and-a-half to
teens. The books contain favorite recipes of Beery’s from her very
successful cooking classes. Batter Up Kids: Delicious Desserts
contains fun dessert recipes such as:
- Pink Princess Cake
- Thumbs Up Cookies
- Blast-off Blueberry Biscuits
- Can You Fondue?
Batter Up Kids: Sensational Snacks shows what a snap it is to
create healthful snacks that are as fun to eat as they are to create.
Recipes include:
- Animal Crackers
- Itsy-Bitsy Bagel Balls
- Puff The Magic Pancake
- Hola Granola Bars
- Tutti-Frutti Popcorn Balls
- Wacky Wonton Crisps
"I respect the wonder of children and delight in their passion for
cooking," says Beery. "Cooking incorporates every basic educational skill
there is to learn while allowing children the opportunity to experience a
great deal of fun in the process." Beery started out offering 2 -3
culinary classed a week 15 years ago, now she and her staff teaches 2 -3
classes a day, seven days a week. The success of her Batter Up Kids
Culinary Center has lead Beery to expand the business across the
country by offering franchise opportunities.
About the Author
With a degree in elementary education from the University Of Texas and a
passion for cooking, Barbara Beery is someone who has combined
her talents to create a children's culinary school extraordinaire!
Becoming disenchanted with the normal "pre-cooked" children’s cooking
classes in which she had often enrolled her own three children, she was
driven by the desire to teach children’s cooking classes that were more
interactive and included healthier recipe options. Barbara has been a
contributing recipe writer for FamilyFun magazine, is a member of
International Association of Culinary Professionals, and has created
recipes for the "Healthy Eating for Kids" Guideline for the Texas
Department of Agriculture. Beery participated in the Share-Our-Strength’s
Great American Bake Sale in 2003 and 2004, as well as in the recipe
contest for the 40th anniversary of Easy Bake Oven. She has appeared on
the Food Network with Good Eats host, Alton Brown, and has been a guest
chef and speaker at numerous culinary schools across the nation. Beery’s
latest book, the Pink Princess Cookbook, will be carried by FAO
Schwartz for the holidays and available nationwide in October. In
addition, FAO Schwartz will carry Beery’s new Kids Chef ware line
this fall. It will also be available in retail outlets throughout the
country. To learn more about Batter Up Kids, please visit
