Culinary professionals gathered in Chicago for the annual conference of the International Association of Culinary Professionals (IACP) the week of April 9. This illustrious group of chefs, cookbook authors, food specialists and journalists, honored the best among them at a gala awards ceremony on April 14. Ian Hemphill's best selling book, THE SPICE AND HERB BIBLE SECOND EDITION was awarded Best Book in the Food Reference/Technical category.
"This was our first time at an IACP conference and we were so overjoyed to be honored with this award," said author Hemphill, who resides in Sydney, Australia, and grew up working in the family spice business. Eventually, he opened a specialty shop bearing the nickname he has had since his school days: Herbie. Today, Herbie's Spices boasts the largest selection of herbs and spices for sale and export in the Southern Hemisphere. Expanding on the family business, Hemphill's daughter, Kate, a London, England-based chef, contributed 80 recipes to this award-winning book.
The first edition of THE SPICE AND HERB BIBLE enjoyed such enormous success in 2001 that it seemed only natural to create a second edition. Hemphill uses his encyclopedic knowledge and refined palate to guide the home cook in choosing spices, experimenting with herbs, and balancing spices blends that bring authenticity to international recipes. Hemphill provides a detailed narrative of each spice and herb listed in the book, how they are used in major cuisines, and the combinations that give international foods their distinct flavor. Each herb and spice in the book is accompanied by a detailed color photograph to make identification and purchasing easy.
THE SPICE AND HERB BIBLE SECOND EDITION is now going into its second printing and is available world-wide.
